Mid-decade redistricting of House maps by both parties
Stage 4 of 5: Legal action · Lawsuits, subpoenas, charges · Last development Sep 2026
After President Trump urged Texas Republicans in 2025 to redraw House districts before the midterms, several states followed. Republican-led redraws in Texas, North Carolina, Ohio, Florida and Tennessee could add seats for the GOP; Democrats answered with California's voter-approved map, and a court-imposed map in Utah could help Democrats. Missouri must use its 2022 map in 2026 after the Supreme Court sided with the Missouri Supreme Court. Virginia's Supreme Court struck down Democrats' plan. In April 2026 the Supreme Court narrowed the Voting Rights Act in Louisiana v. Callais, which led Louisiana and Alabama to seek new maps.
Maps are drawn by states, and partisan redistricting is generally legal. This entry is listed because the President pushed for it and the Justice Department went to court over California's map. Seat estimates are the parties' own and assume past voting patterns hold.
