End the Russia-Ukraine war within 24 hours

Broken Walked back

Promised as a candidate on 10 May 2023; due 21 Jan 2025. Last checked 19 Oct 2026.

“I'll have that done in 24 hours.”

Donald Trump, 10 May 2023, CNN town hall, Saint Anselm College, N.H.; repeated through 2024

What happened

The war is still going in October 2026. A US-announced energy truce (Oct 11) has not been confirmed by Russia or Ukraine, and new three-way talks are proposed for late October. On Oct 16 Trump waived the new Graham Act sanctions and tariffs on Russia two days before they took effect.

His explanation

Trump later said the 24-hours line was "said in jest" (Time, April 2025). On the sanctions waiver, the White House said enforcing them now "would impede ongoing U.S. efforts to negotiate a durable and comprehensive peace agreement between Ukraine and Russia" (Oct 17, 2026).
