White House ballroom at zero cost to taxpayers

Broken Contested

Promised as president on 20 Oct 2025. Last checked 22 Oct 2026.

“I am honored to be the first President to finally get this much-needed project underway — with zero cost to the American Taxpayer! The White House Ballroom is being privately funded by many generous Patriots, Great American Companies, and, yours truly.”

Donald Trump, 20 Oct 2025, Truth Social post (quoted in full by Fox News)

What happened

A March 2026 project summary obtained by the Washington Post put the cost at about $600 million, with about $307 million expected from taxpayer-funded sources (Secret Service, White House Military Office, Executive Residence). In April 2026 Sen. Graham proposed $400 million for the project, $332 million of it taxpayer funds that he said would be paid for with customs fees; his bill (S. 4430, introduced 29 Apr 2026) was referred to the Finance Committee and has had no action since. The Post's October 2026 donor list shows $333 million from 67 gifts and does not list Trump as a donor; the list excludes in-kind gifts.

His explanation

The White House says "President Trump and generous American patriots are funding the ballroom to the tune of approximately $400 million" (June 2026). Sen. Graham ties the federal money to security and national-security facilities under the ballroom.
